Health Care for the Homeless
Baltimore, MD
impacting the community, not the environment
When it comes to jobs that demonstrate both the mission and capabilities of Harkins, few fit the bill better than the Health Care for the Homeless commercial build. This 56,000-sf headquarters and clinic in downtown Baltimore provides health-related services, education, and advocacy to reduce the burdens of homelessness. In 2017 alone, the organization helped 10,000 people get closer to health and stability. Given our commitment to enriching the communities around us and providing the highest quality construction services, we were thrilled for the opportunity to build this property.
Of the numerous awards and recognition this project received, the most notable was in the category of sustainability. Originally designed to be certified LEED Silver, Harkins helped the project achieve LEED Gold certification. Accomplishing this required attention to detail, creativity, and collaboration at every stage of the project.
How Harkins Made A Difference:
- Harkins provided a thorough review of the project specification and designated a LEED Accredited Professional to review all subcontractor submittals.
- The Harkins team installed more than 130 water source heat pumps throughout the facility and a rooftop Energy Recovery Unit, providing the necessary air exchanges.
- Helping this building become the first in Baltimore to earn LEED points for stormwater management, Harkins installed a large green habitat on part of the roof, complemented by a highly reflective Thermoplastic Olefin membrane on the remainder.
- Harkins directly earned 25% of the LEED points needed and achieved a recycling rate of 85%.
The dedication and enthusiasm of the Harkins staff for our project was inspiring.
