Edgewood Commons I
Washington, DC
helping to transform communities
This $23 million renovation of the former Edgewood Terrace community in Washington, DC is one of three large community renovations we have helped CPDC with. The goal was to transform this long-standing affordable community into a more open and engaging place to live. It is the first Neighborhood Network Center in the country, offering access to computers, computer training and the internet so that residents may work towards achieving economic self-sufficiency.
The project renovations included both interior and exterior upgrades to one eight-story building with 220 units and six three-story garden apartment buildings totaling 72 units. Green elements included upgraded mechanical systems, duct lining systems, low flow fixtures, Energy Star appliances, energy-efficient lighting, and Low VOC paints, adhesives, and sealants.
How Harkins Made a Difference
- Because the renovation was performed with tenants in-place, we worked in small portions of the building at a time, coordinating intensively with subcontractors, residents, and management.
- In addition to the apartment renovations, we also revitalized various portions of the site, including new outdoor amenities such as water features, play equipment, a community garden, outdoor assembly areas, and a fitness trail.
The Harkins team was extremely reliable and responsive. Problems were resolved quickly and economically.
