Easton Readiness Center
Easton, MD
a paramount display
of modernization
Located in the heart of Easton, the Easton Readiness Center provides a state-of-the-art environment for administering unit training for mobilization missions through the Maryland Army National Guard. Additionally, state-supported functions such as disaster relief and civil disturbance actions are reinforced.
On a site of approximately eleven acres, the original armory was demolished to make way for the one-story building with a separate storage shop and maintenance training bay. The facility houses training activities with amenities such as classrooms, a learning center, an assembly hall, a full commercial kitchen, family rooms, equipment storage, administrative office suites, a library, a training device room, and a recruiting and retention hub. Exterior developments consist of private vehicle parking, Anti-Terrorism Force Protection (ATFP) measures, and a military-operated vehicle lot.
The building details, exterior materials, and exterior colors complement areas within the Easton community while establishing a level of quality that displays the importance of the facility. We are proud to have built a modern and permanent facility for the State of Maryland to support their National Guard missions, improve the proficiency of service members, reduce overall operational costs to the government, and have a significant visual presence in the community.
How Harkins Made a Difference
- The design-build team made contributions from both a design and construction standpoint with many constructive exchanges about how to best provide the owner with the best value for each dollar spent.
- With the site having a proportion more square than rectangular, early site diagrams sought to establish the optimal way to orient the building so the most heavily occupied administrative and classroom spaces could benefit by natural light and views.
- The design-build team took a four-pronged approach in honoring the State of Maryland’s contract dollars, making early in the design process to solidify local economic benefit.
- A VRF mechanical system was installed in the building in lieu of a traditional water-source heat pump. This energy-efficient system helps keep the building climate–controlled in the areas that are used every day by controlling temperatures on a room-by-room basis.
