The Waypoint at Fairlington

The Waypoint at Fairlington project began in 2016 when the Fairlington Presbyterian Church (FPC) sought to redevelop their underutilized parking lot into affordable housing, furthering their social justice mission. Wesley Housing, a non-profit developer, proposed transforming the lot into 81 units of high-quality, affordable rental housing. Harkins was selected as the general contractor, overseeing the construction of a four-story wood-frame building above a single-level, below-grade concrete parking garage.

The community offers a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units with finishes such as vinyl plank flooring, ceramic tile, LED light fixtures, and electric split mechanical systems. A courtyard plaza encourages community gathering, enhancing the neighborhood’s sense of connectivity. The building meets Energy Star® green building standards and earned National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Silver Certification.

Tax Credit Success

In the final stages of the project, the team faced a crucial challenge—completing nearly eight weeks of work into just three weeks. Through focused effort and close coordination, the team managed to meet the deadline, allowing the building to achieve occupancy and secure vital tax credits for ownership. The successful completion of the project created a thriving community that residents are proud to call home. It also marked Harkins’ first new construction project with Wesley Housing, setting the stage for future partnerships on meaningful projects.

“The Waypoint, now home to 209 culturally diverse residents, as exceeded Wesley Housing’s expectations and will continue to build up the lives of our most vulnerable community members for generations to come.”
