On December 19th, Harkins joined @PennroseCompany, @WRTDesign, and other project partners to celebrate the completion of Uplands Rental Phase II with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Baltimore, MD.

This phase introduces 150 affordable apartments, complete with playgrounds, on-site parking, and upgraded public infrastructure, including utilities, sidewalks, and roads to the 63-acre redevelopment.
This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable community development and creating spaces where Baltimore residents can thrive.

Last Friday marked the conclusion of Harkins’ 2025 Winter Internship Program, where our interns delivered final presentations to our executive team and employee-owners. During these presentations, they shared valuable insights and key takeaways, showcasing the meaningful projects they worked on during their time with us.

Over the last 3 months, our winter interns gained practical construction knowledge, developed their technical skills, and received hands-on experience by reporting to their assigned jobsites daily.

Check out some exciting progress at our Miller’s Grant Phase II project in Ellicott City, MD!

The healthcare building is getting ready for owner walks, the independent living building is receiving its final finishes, and the performing arts center’s rough-in work is underway.

When complete, this new phase of the senior living community will include three buildings: a performing arts center, a two-story senior health center, and a four-story independent living building. The performing arts center will offer an amenity space that provides a large chapel area, kitchen, theater, and a multipurpose room. The health center will expand into an existing building, and the independent living building will feature luxury apartments and a gastro pub. Exterior amenities will include pergolas, fire pits, an outdoor kitchen, and more.

As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at some of the milestone projects that helped define our legacy. One of the most significant projects is the Village of Cross Keys in Baltimore, MD.

Completed in 1970 for The Rouse Company, Cross Keys marked the beginning of Harkins’ journey as a general contractor. Designed by Collins & Kronstadt (now O’Neill Architects) with Joseph Nelson, this thoughtfully planned residential community introduced a new model for integrated urban living.

Construction began in January 1966 and continued through March 1970. The project was developed in three sections:

– Section I: 81 garden-style apartments with garages and a five-story building with 40 units

– Section II: 66 garden apartments along with a six-story, 50-unit structural steel frame building, a notable feature at the time for its scale and engineering

– Section III: 126 garden apartments and 17 luxury townhomes, along with a central community center that served as a gathering place for residents

As we look ahead to the future, we remain proud of the foundation the Village of Cross Keys laid for the decades of service, growth, and innovation that followed.

Last week, Harkins joined @enterprisecommunity, @abd_architects_md, and other project partners to celebrate the grand opening of Magnolia Gardens with a ribbon cutting ceremony in La Plata, MD.

This new garden-style apartment complex has 72 units spread across four buildings and a one-story clubhouse building. It includes robust amenities such as a club room, computer center, and fitness center. The community also features on-site parking and outdoor spaces designed for residents.

Magnolia Gardens features sustainable design elements that reduce long-term operating costs, passing along savings to residents. Its unique architecture helps shape a vibrant, visually appealing community, representing the future of housing in Maryland.

This week, Harkins observed Construction Safety Week by highlighting our commitment to safety, both on and off the jobsite. With this year’s theme focusing on engagement, empowerment, and excellence, we took the opportunity to reinforce the importance of safety stewardship.

Throughout the week, we focused on critical safety topics:

• Monday: We kicked off with a safety standdown and fire drill, reinforcing the importance of planning with precision.

• Tuesday: Our team came together for a discussion on high hazard tasks.

• Wednesday: We encouraged self-reflection, reminding everyone to take ownership of their role in safety.

• Thursday: Lead superintendents and project managers conducted jobsite safety audits.

• Friday: We capped off the week with a team lunch, discussed our roles in maintaining safety excellence, and celebrated our collective commitment.

At Harkins, we understand that safety is not just a priority; it’s our responsibility as stewards of every project. Let’s continue to uphold this standard every day.

Yesterday, Harkins joined Green Street Housing, @abd_architects_md, and other project partners for the ribbon cutting ceremony of Mitchell Landing in Salisbury, MD.

We’re proud to mark the start of resident move-ins for this affordable housing project! Two of the five buildings are complete, with the others on track to finish in the summer. Mitchell Landing’s full gut renovation includes:

• All-new interior finishes and systems
• Exterior upgrades included new roofs, siding, and entry stair repairs
• Minimal sitework to complete the transformation

On April 27th, our team proudly joined thousands in Baltimore for a record-breaking day of community, compassion, and purpose at the Red Shoe Shuffle 5K to support @rmhcmaryland.

With 3,200 participants, $550,000 raised, and incredible support from families, volunteers, and sponsors, the day was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when community comes together.
